What Is Longboarding?

Longboarding is one of the fastest growing sports in the US and abroad. Like skateboarding, the longboard is composed of a board with wheels and trucks that resemble a traditional skateboard. Both require bearings to keep the wheels moving and grip tape to give the rider more traction while riding.

That is where the similarities end.

Longboards are, well...long. With a lengthy platform to skate on, the longboard gives the boarder additional stability and speed. These are two necessary requirements for the longboarder because longboarding, unlike traditional skateboarding, often means cruising down hills and sometimes, long distance journeys. (by long distance we mean outside of a skate park!)

Another key distinction is the Longboard Trucks. Usually much longer in length, longboard trucks incorporate a bushing or spring system that allows the boarder to displace his/her weight in order to turn the board. This act of "carving" mostly resembles the movement of surfing with which longboarding is inspired.

The wheels of skateboards and longboards is one of the biggest differences. Most skateboard wheels have a much higher durometer then most longboard wheels. In English, skateboard wheels are much harder then petroleum-based urethane wheels that longboarders use. Skateboard wheels most of the time incorporate a well-rounded lip wheel, while longboard wheels use both a well rounded and flat lip wheel. The more flat, the more stable and better for speed it is, while the well rounded lip is better for sliding.

There are many types, or disciplines, to longboarding. The most popular is cruising which does not require much effort and is very easy to pick up. Other disciplines include downhill speedboarding, freeriding, dancing, and slalom, which will all be defined in another article.

The mission of the longboard was to merge the sports of surfing, snowboarding, and skateboarding all in one. With the ability to carve the concrete surf, cruise down the mountains, and skate the parks, longboarding has succesfully done its job. With frequent progression and tons of innovation going into the sport, longboarding has a very bright future ahead of it.
